Iowa clouds
following each other
Into Eternity
—Jack Kerouac
High humidity
and high heat undermine my
delusion of youth

Cat flat on her back
in the middle of the room—
New carpeting.

Over the blue lake,
vivid colors and clear air—
Steady breeze

Sitting in my chair
near the open window,
cool night air enters,
surrounds me for a moment,
and moves on in the warm house.

across the windshield—
raindrops from dark clouds hanging
low over the lake

Deer leave the dark woods
to browse in the tall spring grass—
Sunset by the lake.

Deer appear from the tree line
one by one—
Evening breeze.

A friend traveling in Italy writes...
swallows rise from the earth
jetting into arcs that do not intersect.
they fly as though they have been launched
by the young boys on the piazza below
who shout italian epithets to go
faster and higher, each boy urging
his bird to reach the bell tower first
where the setting sun will reflect the pink
and white stone of Santa Chiara
and the bells will toll one last time before
morning. ...
Rustling leaves, chirping crickets,
a train rumbling off in the distance—
Open window, summer night.
